Screen Golf (스크린 골프)

Ahhhhhh the smell of fresh cut grass, the sun tapping on my face as it pokes through the trees, the musk of a moist sand bunker, birds chirping in the trees. Unfortunately these are all things you won’t get during screen golf, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduced these soon. Screen golf has almost every other feature you can think of, all the way down to a rotating platform to mirror the slope of terrain.

Screen Golf was started in 2001 by Golfzone and has grown to include more than 6,000 locations. While golf simulators can be found around the world, South Korea opens some 7 of every 10 new simulation room. With regular golf being about 2x-3x more expensive than in the States, at 200-300m won for a membership or 250,000 won for an 18 hole round, screen golf provides a convenient and affordable alternative at about 15,000-40,000won (depending on time). Its ubiquity places them in convenient locations all over Seoul, and games can be played in as short as 1hr. However, for me, because I double par on always every hole, games take much longer.

The simulation is spot on. Clouds and trees rock by in HD and birds twitter. Spectators go into a constrained hush as you swing and cheer when you make a good shot. And as I mentioned earlier, the platform shifts depending on your unique terrain. While not every shot is perfectly aligned with your actual shot, the number of errors is minimal, and a reshot button (F12) is available.

You begin at the front desk by getting golf shoes and gloves and being shown to a room about the size of a master bedroom. Inside the room are a couch or two, golf clubs, a computer, and a large screen. The worker will then set up a driving range practice round which lasts about 10 minutes. The practice time is a great way to hone your skills as the game provides detailed feedback including pictures of your club position as it hits the ball, and a video monitor to watch a replay of your entire stroke. For me, these videos merely mock my horrid clumsy swatting. Actually because I played so much baseball when I was young, I wave the thing like a bat.

After the practice period you call the worker back in and he’ll run you through game set up. There you select a course (we had the fortunate opportunity to play on my hometown’s world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course), enter your names, and choose 9 or 18 holes. Depending on how many players and your skill level games can run from anywhere from 1-4hrs. Beer is usually available for about 10,000won a pitcher, and snacks and coffee are also available.

Yeah, check out my swing… I obviously have no idea what I’m doing.

Some beer, definitely.

Much thanks to John Kim for providing all the pictures for this article. (And for being the only person I can beat at golf.)

Sam Ryan’s – Good Ol’ American Style Pub in Itaewon #2

I’ve always heard how great the spots were behind Hamilton Hotel, but just never got around to visiting. Well a buddy and I took a walk back there this Saturday and found ourselves in Sam Ryan’s, an American style sports pub. While Sam Ryan’s may boast an early 90s styled website, their decor was modern (not exactly sexy) and comfortable. Though we went on a Saturday afternoon and couldn’t see it packed full of people, the incredibly drunk party in the corner helped us imagine how this pub might buzz on a busy night.

The Food
After staring at the well endowed menu for a good 10 minutes (not for size mind you, but for quality of menu items), we eventually chose the Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Nachos to accompany our standard beer. Their only Korean beer on tap was OB, IMO a definite step down from my favorite Cass. The food was standard pub grub. Good, but not incredible. The chicken was tender on the inside, crispy on the out. The fries – fresh with the similar tender/crispy ratio to the chicken. The nachos were also very good with a large load of fresh pico de gallo, minced jalapeños, shredded cheese, and parmesan cheese. Standard salsa and sour cream were served on the side, which is my preferred setup as it doesn’t turn the nachos to mush.

Finally some quality nachos to help abate the trauma from my birthday last month. At Lemon Terrace in Gangnam we were served nachos with cheese and chocolate and were denied a request to replace it because it had “popular demand”. My ass. Did I complain about that before? Well it deserves at lease two public shamings.

Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich w/ Fries 10,500

Nachos 12,500

It isn’t hard to imagine Sam Ryan’s packed full on a Friday/Saturday night. It’s got all the right ingredients to host drunk itaewonites out on the night: decently priced drinks, friendly staff, 3 authentic dart boards, plenty of floor space, sports playing on a half dozen big screen tvs, and unique to this establishment… a drinking game wheel.

Drinking Game Wheel
The wheel is a great idea and loads of entertainment. The drunk group that was there that day spun it a good dozen times and myself and Mike each took our turns. For every purchased drink you can take a spin, though I doubt they enforce that rule. The goal isn’t necessarily to give away drinks, but rather to promote a good time and keep the lubricant flowing. Mike won the “Buy a drink and chug it and get a free beer.” When we requested to not follow through the girl pointed out the sign below which reads “Play at Your Own Risk – If you spin and refuse to honor the result, we must charge you 5,000 won!!”. This sucks for me as there’s a section that says “SEXY dance for a drink”. Try as I would, my bumbles would probably get me charged more than 5,000.

The Rundown
A comfortable spot to have some beer and catch a game. 3 authentic dart boards, plenty of seats, reasonably priced drinks, and even a homemade drinking board wheel offer plenty of entertainment.

Koo-Ee-Do-La-Ku 쿠이도라쿠 The Best Japanese Ramen in Seoul

The name in Korean is 쿠이도라쿠. Yeah, I have no idea what that name means either. Actually until today I’ve just referred to this place as the awesome ramen spot next to my house. As my favorite ramen place is halfway around the world I’ve been deprived of great ramen for a long time. Thank God I moved in next to the best damn Ramen in Seoul. And this place is legit. The guys barely even speak Korean. In America its kind of taken for granted that a foreign restaurant is going to run by a person of that nationality. Not so in Korea. Which is why I appreciate that the young men running this place are so Japanese they barely speak Korean. English is definitely out of the picture. Luckily for those of who you are lingually impaired they have a small menu and big pictures.

Before I go any further… please don’t confuse instant style Korean ramen (라면) with Japanese ramen (라멘). There’s a big difference. According to wikipedia, Ramen (ラーメン rāmen?IPA: [ɽaːmeɴ]) is a Japanese noodle dish. It consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in a meat- or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork (チャーシュー chāshū?), dried seaweed (海苔 nori?), kamaboko, green onions, and occasionally corn. Almost every locality in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the miso ramen of Hokkaido.

Moving on… Everything about this place is great. Where should I start?

1. Price – it’s cheap. Only 6-8k won per bowl and they give you 500 won off if you pay by cash. Be ready to pay before eating though as it’s prepay (선불).

2. Free stuff – Soda, yogurt, rice, and condiments are all self serve and are all free. I love that. In these days when I feel like everyone is trying to nickel and dime 100원하고500원 me, it’s nice having a neighborhood joint that just gives these things away.

3. Not pretentious. If you’re familiar with my reviews, you know I like comfortable homey spots. This place is it.

4. The food is AWESOME. The ramen is always fresh and hot and perfectly balanced without being overly salty. I’ve had almost every dish here (not hard, as there are only about 7) and they’re all perfect. The meat also is always ridiculously tender. They boil the pork bones in these giant tubs near the door and the smell wafts outside and begs me in every time I walk by. Also, I want to particularly mention the eggs. The eggs are cooked perfectly. They soft, and the yolk is always almost runny. I have no idea how they do it so consistently every damn time, but it’s always perfect.

Here are some pictures. Enjoy!!

Naengmyun w/ meat (고기주는냉면집)

Some information on 녕면 (naengmyun) from wikipedia here.

naengmyun is one of my favorite lunchtime meals. It’s cold, refreshing, tasty, and filling, and I eat the shit out of it, all the time. So I know what’s up. With that said, this is my favorite nengmyun place in Korea.

A recent phenomenon has been the rise of naengmyun houses giving some meat as a side accompaniment, and for the low price of just 5,000, it’s a great deal. The nengmyun flavor is a bit monoflavorful, so mixing it meat is a welcome addition.

At this place you order and pay first and take a seat. Then you serve your own water and 육수(beef broth). Everywhere has a different tasting beef broth… and the one they make here is.. AMAZING. It’s actually the single thing that steps this place above all the others. It’s a unique, very spicy flavor that doesn’t burn as a normal spice does. Peppery almost. I’m not sure how to describe it. Pure sex. That works.

It’s a little hard to find. But look up for the sign and enjoy the crazy neighborhood of myungdong.

Also just a warning that the spicy nengmyung (비빔냉면) here is very spicy. You’ve been warned.

Afterwards walk down the street and grab some ice cream. :) Here’s me, my mom, and a friend.

The meat referred here is dweji-gogi or so-gogi ? May I know what the others written on the “menu card” there besides the naengmyun ?

Gecko’s Terrace (게코스테라스) – Good ‘ol American Style Bar

One thing that always bothered me in Korea is the inability to get a beer for a decent price. It’s not that beer is so expensive, but at most restaurants/bars you are almost always forced to order food if you want a drink. That’s bananas. I just want to sit down at a pub and have a beer. It’s this quest, to beer without food, that’s repeatedly led me to Gecko’s.

Gecko’s has everything a great bar needs. Decently-priced drinks, darts (real darts btw), lots of people, lots of tables, plenty of bar seating, terrace tables (which I don’t recommend in the summer because of mosquitos), good food, and workers that speak English. It’s also conveniently located next to Itaewon Station (exit 4, directly across from Hamilton Hotel) and so makes for an easy meeting location. Most importantly, I’ve always had a great time here.

I’ve only ordered two food items here: fries and chicken wings. Unfortunately I didn’t take a picture of either. The fries were a great value – a full plate of very fresh fries for about 7,000. The chicken wings were less so – a meager 7 wings for about 9,000. But to their credit, tasty. All the proper American sauces are on hand – tobasco, ranch, ketchup, mustard, bbq, etc. Standard pub fare.

The drinks are decent enough. I can be a snob about properly made drinks and this place has never let me down. Their dry gin martinis are properly dry, unlike most I get in Korea, and their Bloody Mary’s are well made with V8.

Me and my friends saying hi. :)
